FORESTRY TECHNICIAN/PROJECT MANAGER


At the request of the Nuxalk Forestry Advisory Committee and the company Board of Directors, NFLP is seeking a forestry technician/project manager to assist the CEO in operational matters.

This document sets out the draft job description and statement of required qualifications for the position.

It is anticipated that the position will initially be filled on a short-term contract basis, with possibility of transition to full-time permanent employment. 


INITIAL STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS

  • A Nuxalk member would be preferred if possible
  • Completed or nearing completion of qualifications as Registered Professional Forester (RPF) so that they could sign off on plans and submissions to regulatory authority.
  • Familiar with leading edge new low volume removal and uneven age stand management practices in the logging industry, especially as related to the Central Coast region.
  •  Familiar with land tenure regulations, especially as pertains to Community Forest Licence and Non-Replaceable Forest Licence tenures.
  • Familiar with the regulations regarding Eco-system Based Management under the new Great Bear Rainforest land management regime. 
  • Experienced field worker, with training/experience in layout, map orienteering, traversing in chain/compass and GPS mapping
DRAFT JOB DESCRIPTION  


The Contractor will work as directed by the CEO as project manager on important matters involving the planning and operation of logging activities in the existing tenures held by NFLP.  Specific projects anticipated include:

  • Working in conjunction with the Nuxalk Stewardship Office in recommending design elements in the new structure of Landscape Resource Designs within the Great Bear region.  This will involve providing technical expertise to help inform the layout of land tenures to ensure there are viable commercial harvest opportunities within the land tenure area, while incorporating the latest EBM techniques.  It will be important to be able to achieve consensus to ensure viable logging operations can continue under the latest management rules. 
  • Initial design and operational supervision for the proposed logging operations. Liaison with logging contractor A&A, including site visits to logging operations to review and monitor progress.
  • Working to ensure and to maximize Nuxalk employment of workers, equipment and subcontractors within planned and existing operations.
  • Planning for upcoming activities to follow on after completion of the next project.
  • Provide advice and assistance in reviewing contractor performance after the current subcontract with A&A Logging expires.  
  • Evaluating options and planning towards implementing a new contract or new operations post-contract, whether or not with a replacement contractor.
  • Long-term strategic planning and review of current 5 year plan to recommend changes or development of new 5 year plan.
  • Additional development of long term planning processes for implementation of 10 year, 20 year or longer range planning exercises.
  • Other duties as requested by the CEO
